I\u2019m not going to lie, it makes my blood boil. When I set up my business, The Talent Cycle, I named it that because I was working with education and businesses. I could see that what we do and learn at school, has an impact on us in later life, whether it be workplace skills, career choices or simply mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block4\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"viewer-4jtds\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block5\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-6mu50\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">This was put better by Taibi Kahler (1975) who identified that we all have personal drivers, which are ways we learned to behave as children by the expectations placed on us. These drivers can have both positive and negative impacts. Kahler defined 5 main categories of these drivers:<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block6\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"viewer-7epd3\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block7\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-amuom\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u201cHurry Up\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block8\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-do8h0\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Want and can get a lot done in a short space of time, they are driven by tight deadlines. This need to get everything done so quickly can backfire as they can be prone to making mistakes in the rush.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block9\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"viewer-436h7\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block10\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-cqr9i\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u201cBe Perfect\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block11\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-416p\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Desire to always do the \u2018right\u2019 thing, seek perfectionism, check for inaccuracies and can see ahead to potential problems. They also have a fear of failure, losing control and are overly critical of others. <\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block12\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"viewer-b3k2b\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block13\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-do3co\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u201cTry Harder\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block14\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-bt9tg\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">Are very enthusiastic, getting involved in lots of things and put themselves forward. Their need to keep everyone \u2018together\u2019 means they may not challenge even when they think it is needed which means a lack of constructive debate or even resentment.<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block21\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"viewer-ctksp\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block22\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-9gqcq\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">This model is something I use a lot in coaching, often getting a \u2018wry smile\u2019 from a client as I reach one or other of the categories. The reason I regularly use this model with clients is that it is often a good starting point for exploring the limiting beliefs they are holding about themselves. If you have a deep-rooted driver for perfectionism, it\u2019s not surprising that you\u2019ll feel like an imposter in a workplace where being perfect all the time, is an impossible standard to live up to. So, I\u2019ll work to break down these barriers with clients, by asking three key questions:<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block23\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"viewer-936tl\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block24\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-5qv9v\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u00b7 Which of the key drivers do you recognise most in yourself?<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block25\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-adkoq\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u00b7 What are the possible implications of this?<\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block26\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-pimr\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u00b7 What strategies might you employ to gain control of your drivers? <\/span><\/p>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block27\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"viewer-9rlj1\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block28\"><\/div>\n<p id=\"viewer-flc4o\" class=\"XzvDs _208Ie _1atvN _2QAo- _25MYV _2WrB- _1atvN public-DraftStyleDefault-block-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-text-ltr\"><span class=\"vkIF2 public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\">And make no bones about it, these drivers are learnt and reinforced as children. With school being a big part of any child\u2019s life, what we teach them there will have an even greater impact. So, telling children they must catch up, reinforces drivers of perfectionism, hurrying up and trying harder, which can all negatively impact their health and wellbeing, not to mention actually reduce their productivity so lesson their chance of being able to \u2018catch up\u2019. The reality is, these young people have tried hard enough, for long enough, in the midst of a scary and tiring pandemic. Not only does this impact these amazing young people, it also sets the cycle for creating workplaces of stress rather than employee wellbeing.
